Liberté, égalité, fraternité

“This piece depicts two Sikh women wearing traditional articles of faith: the dastaar (turban) and chuni (scarf) with their mouths gagged. The gags represent the oppressive 2004 French legislation that banned religious articles of faith to be worn in public. ‘Liberté, égalité, fraternité’ is French for ‘Liberty, equality, fraternity (brotherhood),’ and is the national motto of France. It is shown here to illustrate the irony of such a slogan in light of an unjust law that limits the development of a free and equal society.”
